What is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga consists of a range of mind-body practices that includes postures, breathing exercises, and meditation techniques. Yoga therapy tailors these practices to meet the specific health needs and goals of a group or individual. Yoga therapy helps to promote overall health, as well as assist in reducing symptoms associated with common medical conditions. Yoga therapy is defined by the International Association of Yoga Therapists as “the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of yoga” and is a “biopsychosocial-spiritual approach to wellness.” Yoga therapy can complement physical, occupational, and massage therapy; psychotherapy; and more. Although they do not diagnose or treat diseases certified yoga therapists are trained in anatomy, physiology, and mental health and are competent in referring to and interacting with other healthcare professionals.
Yoga Therapy is Great For:
- Co-creting a wellness plan that supports your lifelong physical, emotional, mental, and/or spiritual health needs
- Approaching afflictions (disease or disorder) using the framework of therapeutic yoga
- Incorporating all layers of your being to promote intrinsic healing
How Does Yoga Therapy Differ From a Traditional Yoga Practice or Class?
Yoga therapy distinguishes itself through its ability to tailor specific techniques to meet the health needs and goals of a particular group or individual. Yoga teachers are required to have a minimum of 200 hours of training to be registered. A yoga therapist, on the other hand, completes more than 800 hours of training in areas such as biomedical sciences, therapeutic applications, and practical experience. Yoga therapists, therefore, have the capacity to individualize treatment, integrating evidence-based protocols with traditional meditation, postural, and breathing techniques to better meet the needs and goals of their clients.
What Can I Expect in a Private Yoga Therapy Session?
Each client will first complete a comprehensive intake form to be discussed and reviewed with the Yoga Therapist during the intake session. During this initial session the therapist and client will develop wellness goals as well as create and discuss a plan to help meet those goals.
Each session will begin with some time to share, a centering activity, review of previous session and overview of current session and then depending on the client and their needs may include:
- energy and stress balancing exercises
- warm ups
- yoga postures both supported or unsupported
- yoga nidra
- guided meditation
- personal affirmations
- mudras (hand gestures)
- deep relaxation
- final reflection/sharing
Each session is an opportunity to review the agreed upon plan to allow for opportunity to change or adjust as needed. Gentle touch and facilitated stretching may be included, with explicit permission from the client, depending upon the individual client’s needs.
All sessions include take home exercises for at home practice. Please wear comfortable clothing and consider dressing in layers to allow yourself to regulate your internal temperature.
